My Story
My name is Christopher Alan Como. I was born March 12, 1980 in Compton, California. I am the second oldest of five boys and one girl. I was born into a family of humble beginnings, however I was blessed with two hard working parents who made sure all of my siblings and I were provided with the necessities...food, clothing & shelter. I learned at a young age that I had a passion for two things...basketball and art. I expressed an interest in these activities that seemed inbred. With adequate resources, I was able to begin the cultivation of my skill level.
My parents were instrumental in the development of my interests. My mother, Joy Young, was into sewing and painting ceramics and my father, Rudolph Como III was an athlete who participated in multiple sports including basketball. My father was also an exceptional carpenter. He designed various pieces of furniture and constructed numerous patio decks. With my parents’ creativity combined, my artistic growth appeared inevitable.
In my years of elementary through high school my interest in basketball gradually exceeded my need to draw. Though my skill- level was above average, I began to view art as a hobby as opposed to possible career. After my time in high school ended, and after a brief lackluster stay at a community college, it became evident that a lucrative career in athletics was far fetched. Like many families, my parents believed that at that at the age of eighteen, one must be in pursuit of independence. So in 1998 I left home.
Along my journey I met my fiancé, Amy Butler, who later gave birth to my son Geronimo. Attempting to strengthen a family bond became top priority; therefore being a provider took precedence over any extra curricular activities. On November 18, 2000 my fiancé died in a car accident. I gave up custody of my son temporarily to his grandparents and began searching for stability for the sake of my son and myself. In the process I made several mistakes that led me further away from bonding with my son.
After soul-searching and a spiritual awakening I made significant steps toward finding structure. A newfound love for art was also rekindled. With any free time I encountered, I began challenging myself with projects that would have never previously attempted. Surprisingly I was much better than I anticipated. Other than my child, art is my life.
I feel that there is a place for me in the world of art and I would like to inspire others while making a name for myself. Though I have not had any formal training I have been blessed with tips from several great, undiscovered artist. I also observe, from everyday life, what catches my eye and implement it into my work in addition to my own trial and error.
I believe that a genuine love for a craft can only lead to improvement and excelling to new levels of creativity. My goal is to make a living doing what I enjoy and I feel now more than ever that the sky is the limit.
